Rostering & Team Placement

We know team placement is important to players and families, and we receive many questions each season about how teams are formed. Our goal is to create teams that provide a positive experience for as many players as possible while balancing registration numbers, schools, coaches, friend requests, and overall team sizes.

Below is an overview of how our rostering process works and what families should expect.

Teams Start Fresh Each Season

Teams do not automatically roll over from one season to the next.

Registration numbers, available coaches, schools, friend requests, and player participation change every season. For that reason, we create new rosters each season based on the information submitted during the current registration period.

Being on a team with certain players or coaches in a previous season does not guarantee placement with them in a future season.

The League Creates All Rosters

All teams are formed by the league. Coaches do not select or create their own teams.

We appreciate our volunteer coaches tremendously, but roster decisions are handled by the league so that we can consider the needs of the entire division rather than individual teams.

Friend & Coach Requests

During registration, families have the opportunity to submit friend and/or coach requests.

We make every effort to accommodate as many requests as possible, but requests are not guaranteed.

When building teams, we look at requests collectively. Moving or placing one player can affect several other players' requests, coaching assignments, school groupings, and team sizes. For that reason, it is not always possible to accommodate every individual request.

Our primary goal is to place players with connections whenever possible and create teams where kids can have a positive and enjoyable experience.

Team Balance

We try to create reasonably balanced teams in terms of roster size, school/community connections, and requests.

However, we do not have a formal player rating or evaluation system for our recreational league and do not know the talent level of every player. Therefore, teams are not formed or balanced based primarily on perceived athletic ability.

Waitlist Players

We do our best to find a spot for every player who joins the waitlist, but placement is based on roster needs and availability.

As openings become available, we offer spots to waitlisted players in the order they were added to the waitlist. Spots are offered as needed to fill existing rosters, so we cannot guarantee placement on a specific team or with requested friends or coaches.

Why We Limit Roster Changes

Once rosters are finalized and released, changes become extremely difficult.

A move that may appear simple for one player can create a chain reaction affecting multiple families and teams. It can break other friend requests, change team sizes, impact coaching assignments, and create additional requests for changes.

Because we receive a large number of roster change requests each season, we must apply our policy consistently across the league.

After rosters are released, we will only consider a roster change in an extreme circumstance or to correct a league/coaching error.

Carpooling, practice preferences, previous team placement, or an unfulfilled friend/coach request generally do not qualify as extreme circumstances.

If you believe there is information we were not aware of that creates an exceptional situation, you are welcome to contact us and we will review it.

What If My Child Doesn't Know Anyone?

We understand this can be disappointing, particularly for younger players. We typically try to keep school districts together.

We do our best to give every player a connection when possible, but occasionally registration numbers and roster constraints make that impossible. Flag football is also a great opportunity for players to meet new teammates and develop new friendships, and we encourage families to give their assigned team a chance.

What If We Decide Not to Play?

If your player no longer wishes to participate after receiving their team assignment, you may request a refund in accordance with our refund policy:

Before the first practice: 50% refund, minus service fees.

Our Goal

We understand that not every roster will work out exactly as every family hoped. With hundreds of individual requests and more than 2,000 players to place, it is unfortunately impossible to satisfy every request.

Please know that a tremendous amount of time and consideration goes into creating the rosters. Our goal is to accommodate as many requests as possible while creating teams that allow all of our players to have a fun, positive and successful flag football season.
